Rev. Rebecca Highfield, Minister
May 2012
Since we had such a wonderful Easter morning here at Independence I can't help but want that joyful spirit to continue into the Spring. I want to keep celebrating the young men and women who were baptized, the music that stirred our hearts, and especially the Spirit of the Lord that lives among us still! But I also know that no church can pause to savor the moment for too long. At some point we have to move forward and live into a new day. As we look ahead we can see that Pentecost is quickly approaching on May 27. On that day we will celebrate the birth of the church, when the Holy Spirit descended and the apostles were equipped for ministry.
Leading up to Pentecost, we have the opportunity to prepare ourselves for this great occasion by thinking about how God works through His people and in turn how we choose to join with God in being witnesses of the faith. No one models this spiritual journey better than the early Christians who were trying to make sense of the Resurrection, so we will read their stories that were shared in the Acts of the Apostles.
Here is an outline of sermon topics for the weeks leading up to and including Pentecost.
May 6 -- Acts 8:26-40 “On the Road Again: God Travels With Us”
May 13 -- Acts 10:44-48 “Opening the Floodgates: God Speaks to Us”
May 20 -- Acts 1:15-26 “Casting Lots: God Shows Us the Way”
May 27 -- Pentecost! Acts 2:1-21 “God Pours Out His Spirit!”
